The focal point of the record as a whole is of the sacred feminine, which is from where the title stems, partly paying tribute to his grandmother and great-grandmother, who were Aboriginal Australian and partly to the environmental aspect, pertaining to the Earth. “We as human beings have all come from some sort of struggle, and the gift that we all have is to channel that energy of pain and struggle into music.”Īll the lyrical content was written solely by Xavier, lending a certain degree of familiarity to the album in spite of its slightly different symphonic trajectory.
“He’s got an amazing story and is very inspirational to us all,” Xavier says reverently. South African bassist Uncle Tio Maloantoa had worked with Xavier previously on his sixth album “Koonyam Sun” before being invited back to form a more definitive fixture in the United Nations. With band members hailing from all corners of the planet, Xavier has nothing but praise and respect for the people who helped him craft the album. His strong egalitarianism ideals are consistently evident throughout his work and even more so in his latest and ninth album “Nanna”. “It was a very powerful gathering of people from all sorts of places with all sorts of stories and we were able to connect them to really celebrate those stories as one through the universal language of music.” “Part of the reason I called the record “Nanna” was because it felt like all our ancestors sat down and had a cup of tea and sort of put it together,” he explains. When I ask whether the formation of The United Nations was partly in an effort to further bring the world bridging into play he asserted that the development took place very organically. With the incorporation of a wide array of traditional elements in his sound, his music serves as a type of bridging device between different cultural worlds.
